Summary
APokemonfan artist has given the Poliwag evolutionary line a redesign with impressive results. The unique take onPokemon’s classic Water-type family has gained fans.
Poliwag’s family tree is one of the original evolutionary lines that existed in the Gen 1 gamesPokemon Red and Blue. However, it also helped to introduce the notion ofbranched evolutions toPokemon, as Politoed was introduced in Gen 2 as a potential final evolution for the Pokemon. The Poliwag evolutionary line hasn’t received much attention or significant overhauls from Game Freak since, but this fan is giving an idea of what it could look like if its creation had gone a little differently.
Pokemon fan and artist necrovvi has shared their latest reimagining of a Pokemon evolutionary line, this time looking to Poliwag. Poliwag has become smaller and has gained large pink marks on its cheeks, while losing the majority of the swirl on its belly. It bears a slight resemblance to Marill at this stage. Once it evolves into Poliwhirl, the swirl becomes far more pronounced, and it keeps the pink marks on its cheeks, while gaining the gloved-like hands Poliwhirl normally has. From there, Poliwhirl evolves either intoPolitoed or Poliwrath. Poliwrath has become significantly larger and has a more frog-like design, standing upright on two legs and gaining more circles on its body. Finally, Politoed has more pronounced feet, letting it stand leaning forward, and has an extended tongue. Each of the Pokemon was also given a Shiny variant, with the first three becoming orange and blue, and Politoed turning pink and blue.
Poliwag Fans React to Redesign
Numerous fans of thePokemonseries have responded to the redesigns in the comments of the post. The majority of players seem to be very fond of the redesigns, especially since these do a better job of differentiating Poliwhirl and Poliwrath, which largely looked the same originally. Some have also noted that necrovvi’s Poliwrath does a better job of looking like a Fighting-type, with more pronounced muscular development. In general, it seems players like it that thePokemon redesignsmaintain the swirls that are so recognizable in the original version, while shaking up the majority of the design into something new.
Poliwag is one of the Pokemon that’s largely fallen by the wayside in thePokemonseries over the years. It’s been nearly a quarter of a century sincePokemon Gold and Silverreleased, after which the quad of Pokemon hasn’t seen many changes at all. It would be interesting to see them gain aMega Evolution inPokemon Legends: Z-A, but for now, fan designs like these will help to keep the Pokemon family on players' minds.
