Summary

ThePlayStation 5has recently lost its Resume Activity ability. The popular feature was removed without much fanfare, causing confusion amongPS5owners.

Much like its name implies, the Resume Activity button previously allowed users to jump straight back into their most recently played game (which supported the feature), continuing where they left off rather than cold-booting it. But it disappeared following the release of thePS5 firmware update 24.06-10.00.00, which rolled out in mid-September 2024.

And while some owners of Sony’s latest console later speculated that the button was removed or broken by mistake, such theories are now looking even less likely than they originally did. As noted byScreen Rant, the most recentPS5 firmware update from late October 2024, identified by version number 24.07-10.20.00, is largely focused on improving the console’s Activity Cards. Specifically, it introduces three new activity categories: Not Started, In Progress, and Completed. All three still hide potential spoilers, as is the case with trophy lists. The change itself suggests that Sony is currently actively working on revamping Activity Cards, making it less likely that the Resume Activity button was removed by mistake.

PS5 ‘Resume Activity’ Feature Might Never Come Back

The feature’s disappearance being intentional was always the likeliest scenario. After all, the patch notes attached to the 24.06-10.00.00 update from mid-September 2024 already mentioned that playing a “specific activity” would now require players to “start the game first and find it” via menus. This would be an unusual remark to include if the Resume Activity button was removed by mistake. A few weeks later, thePS5 received another patch in late September 2024, which didn’t bring back the button. Now that this latest one didn’t do so either, it seems like the Resume Activity feature might be gone for good.

As things stand right now, there are currently two options to “resume” playing a game after putting the PS5 to sleep. One is to just select its tile icon from the main system menu, while the other is to scroll down to the bottom of its tab and select “Play Game.” Neither action will replicate the functionality of the Resume Activity button, as both merely make the console cold-boot any given game.

The PS5 hence no longer offers anything resembling theXbox Series X/S Quick Resume feature. Microsoft’s take on this idea was already more versatile than Sony’s Resume Activity button, not least because it allows users to suspend more than one game. And while Quick Resume isn’t supported by all Xbox Series X/S games, neither did Resume Activity work with every PS5 title.
