Summary
A new finding might allude to the Greek-eraGod of Wargames making their way to the classics catalog of PlayStation Plus Premium in an emulated capacity. Most of the older entries in Sony’s premierGod of Warseries can only be played via cloud streaming on PS Plus Premium, but with the franchise’s 20th anniversary coming up next year, this may very well change.
TheGod of Warseries kicked off in 2005with the titular PS2 game and quickly earned success with over 4.6 million units sold (as of 2012). The sequel,God of War 2, landed in 2007 and accrued similar levels of critical and commercial acclaim. From there, the franchise hits its stride with multiple new entries on the PSP and PS3, namelyGod of War 3,Chains of Olympus,Ghost of Sparta, andAscension. Aside fromGod of War 3’s remastered version, none of these games are natively playable on PS5; a sore point forGod of Warfans.
However, a new PS Plus Premium discovery suggests native emulation for the olderGod of Wartitles could be in the works. An image of Kratos from the Greek-eraGod of Wargames was recently spotted as thekey art for PS Plus Premium’s PS2 classics section, despite those titles being absent from the catalog. This might imply that Sony is working on adding the classicGod of Wargames to PS Plus Premium natively, just in time for the series' 20th anniversary in 2025. Interestingly, a recent rumor claimed thattheseGod of Wargames will be remastered, which could’ve been a mix-up with the PS Plus Premium emulation.
PS Plus Premium’s New PS2 Emulator Presents the Perfect Opportunity for God of War Classics to Return
Sony has increased its efforts to bring PS2 games to PS4 and PS5 in recent memory, especially after the debut of thenew PS2 emulator for PS Plus Premium’s classics catalogearlier this year. Therefore, it doesn’t seem too unreasonable that Sony would want to unshackle the classicGod of Wargames from the bounds of cloud streaming and make them natively playable on modern hardware.God of Waris one of the company’s most critically-acclaimed franchises, so fans would no doubt love the option to play the older games on PS4 and PS5.
Much like the recentSirenre-release on PS Plus Premium, players can expect features like trophies, rewind, save states, video filters, and up-rendering should the classicGod of Wargames land on the subscription service. However, the black sheep in this lineup is God of War Ascension, which is only available on the PS3. Since the PS5 doesn’t feature native PS3 emulation at the moment, God of War Ascension will most likely be relegated to cloud streaming even if the other God of War games make the jump.
