Summary
It seems as though that the codename for the nextNintendoconsole is “Ounce.” Like all other companies,Nintendoassigns codenames to its hardware while they are still in development. Sometimes the codenames seem to have some significance to the product being developed, but other times they do not, or at least, not in a way that is immediately obvious.
For example, the Nintendo 64 was known as Project Reality when it was in development, potentially a nod to its 3D graphics. The GameCube was known as the Dolphin, while the Wii was Revolution, a hint at its revolutionary new motion control capabilities. The Wii U’s codename was Cafe, and finally, theNintendo Switch codename was NX. Fans referred to the Switch as the NX for months before the console was officially revealed thanks to leaks, and it seems as though the same may be true for the next-generation Nintendo console.
Nintendo has not officially announced its next console or acknowledged its codename. However,Pokemondeveloper Game Freak was recently targeted in a massive data leak that has revealed all kinds of information about the franchise’s future plans, including the next Nintendo console. According to the leaked data, anewPokemongame is being developedfor something with the codename Ounce. Without knowing what exactly the next Nintendo console brings to the table, it’s hard to say if this codename has any relevance to the device’s features or capabilities.
What is the Switch 2 Leaked Codename?
That being said, it was claimed back in May that Nintendo was potentially working on anenhanced port ofBreath of the Wildfor the new console. Back then, Sega leaker Midori brought up the “Ounce” codename. At the time, it was speculated that the codename could potentially refer to the weight of the new Nintendo console, and how it will still be relatively light despite the significant upgrades it will have over the existing Switch models.
It remains to be seen exactly what the Switch 2 is bringing to the table, but the rumors have been swirling. Various leaks and rumors suggest that theSwitch 2 console may even have a dual-screen set-up, ala the Nintendo DS, with magnetic Joy-Cons and a “wheel” not unlike what’s used on computer mice. But until Nintendo itself reveals the next-generation console, fans should take all leaks and rumors with a grain of salt. The next-generation Nintendo console is expected to be revealed at some point between now and April 2025, so details should come at some point within the next six months or so.
