Summary
Season 2 of the sci-fi thriller seriesSeveranceis yet to debut, but plans may already be in motion for a third season. One of the producers of the Apple TV+ series has commented on the future ofSeverance, hinting that it may involve many additional seasons.
Severancewas a raging success forApple TV+when it premiered in 2022, earning a 97% Rotten Tomatoes score and 14 Emmy Nominations. The series follows the employees of the fictional Lumon company, who undergo a procedure that separates their work memories from their non-work memories. Adam Scott, Britt Lower, Patricia Arquette, and John Turturro star in the series, and the majority of the episodes are directed by Ben Stiller.Severancewas renewed for a second season in April 2022 but went through multiple production delays due to the writer’s and actor’s guild strikes in Hollywood.
Apple TV+ has confirmedSeverance’ssecond season will finally premiere on June 04, 2025, but fans of the show may have more to look forward to based on a recent update. Inan interview with IndieWire,Severanceco-executive producer Mohamad El Masri revealed that future seasons of the sci-fi thriller have already been mapped out. “Even in Season 2, we were talking about, what is the end game, and how does this show end?” the producer said, adding that the writers had to constantly think about “how does this set up Season 3 and beyond?”
Even in Season 2, we were talking about, what is the end game and how does this show end? A lot of work was talking about that. I think there’s a natural overlap that happens, especially with the second season of a show, that you’ve got to keep [the momentum] going. People are interested, people are watching, and now with Season 2, you really have to sort of think about, not just what is Season 2 going to deliver in a satisfying way, but how does this set up Season 3 and beyond?
At the time of writing a third season ofSeveranceis yet to be confirmed, but Masri revealed that “there was work being done on Season 3 while they were still shooting Season 2,” which suggests another season ofSeveranceis likely should it continue to be successful. The producer added that the team hopes not to repeat the 3.5-year gap that occurred between Seasons 1 and 2 for Season 3, but that head creativesBen Stiller and Dan Ericksonwill only release the season when they believe it is perfect.
Severance’sfirst season set up an intriguing world that left viewers with plenty of questions that would likely take multiple seasons to answer. The last episode saw Mark (Scott), Helly (Lower), and Irving (Turturro) successfully awaken their innies (work personas) outside of the confines of Lumon, which led them to learn about their outies' lives. However, things inSeverancewere left on a cliffhangeras the three reverted back to their outie selves right as many major revelations came to light.
Teasers for the upcoming Season 2 ofSeverancehave been sparse on details, with Apple TV+ only offering that Mark and his comrades will endure the consequences of trifling with the severance barrier. Behind the scenes, Beau Willimon (Andor, House of Cards) was added as an additional writer on the series for Season 2, andGwendoline Christie (Game of Thrones) has joined the castin an undisclosed role.
While many TV shows nowadays struggle to get past a first season, it’s encouraging that the creatives on the Apple TV+ show seem to be following a plan. ShouldSeverancebe allowed to continuefor its desired number of seasons, hopefully, it will result in a satisfying conclusion to all the series' high-concept questions.
SeveranceSeason 2 will premiere on Apple TV+ on Jul 01, 2025.
