The Alternate Masks for James

When starting a new game, players are given a rather odd choice of selecting a mask for James to wear in the playthrough. Although it’s optional, it’s a cool little nod or more like a foreshadowing of the events to come later in the game.

The Abandoned Comic Sans Sign

There was a controversy withSilent Hill 2in the HD collection where theSilent HillRanch signboard’s font was changed to Comic Sans. This silly font sparked outrage among fans and reviewers, criticizing the game for turning the sign’s look into a comical one.

With the release ofSilent Hill 2 Remake, fans were looking forward to seeing the latest iteration of the sign. To their surprise, the developers stuck to the original font of the sign, which pleased the community.

However, upon further inspection of the area byusing a free-camera mod, players were able todiscover the controversial signboard in Comic Sans font. It’s still present in the game but thrown away out of sight in theSilent HillRanch’s barn. This was rather a witty way for the Bloober Team to reference a rather weird era of remasters in theSilent Hillfranchise.

Silent Hill 2’s Original Map

Once players enter the Wood Side Apartments, they’ll be able to spot the classicSilent Hill 2map in the courtyard area. This is a nice callback to the original game, as veteran players have almost memorized the map while playing several playthroughs of the game while waiting for the remake.

Another version of the classic mapcan be found in Neely’s Bar in the Otherworld version of Western South Vale. This map is much more bloody and tattered, reflecting the world it’s found in.

This numeric combination was used in the first-ever door code puzzle ever seen in video games. Since then, countless games have reused this code as an inside joke to the history behind it, but also to pay homage to the studio’s creation.

The Infamous Pizza Line

Silent Hill 2 Remakechanged a lot of its gameplay moments, and that comical interaction between James and Eddie in Pete’s Bowl-O-Rama was also altered. In the original, James visits the bowling alley with Maria and finds Eddie eating a pizza. James says an iconic line in reaction to Eddie’s munching, “This town is full of monsters. How can you sit there and eat pizza?”

The game’s community found this scene to be hilarious while forever immortalizing it through memes. Even though Remake changed up this scene to preserve the serious tone of the game, it’s still referenced. If players head to Bowl-o-Rama before cutting through Jack’s Inn, James will spot abox of pizza on the tablesaying a rephrased version of the line.

However, if he stays for some time in front of the blank projector image, he’ll witness something for a split second.A video will flash on the screenthat first-time players won’t know what to make of.

Players who’ve already completed the game will immediately recognize this scene, which foreshadowsSilent Hill 2’splot twist. Maybe this is James' repressed memory freeing itself gradually as he ventures through the Town.

However, if you equip the chainsaw and stand idle for a few minutes,James will do a special animationlifting it over his head, and screaming like a maniac. This is a callback to the similar animation in the originalSilent Hill 2. If you unlock the door and let Maria in, it will trigger an interaction where she’ll ask James if the outfit would look good on her. This interaction also counts towards players getting the “Maria” ending, which is obtainable in the first playthrough.

Veteran players of the originalSilent Hill 2will remember the moment when James receives Pyramid Head’s weapon, the Great Knife, as a weapon. In the original, the weapon can be used towards the end of the game and is quite powerful at striking down enemies.
