Summary

A devotedSilent Hill 2remake player made a nostalgic rig to play the game on a classic CRT TV to simulate the feeling of playing it in the era of classic PS2 games, much like the original version. Not only that, but they even turned off most of the modern quality of life features to fully sell the look, making the modern, reimaginedSilent Hill 2into something that looks straight out of the early 2000s.

The recent remake of the survival horror classicSilent Hill 2saw a lot of unique additionsto the original game’s presentation, even aside from its over-the-shoulder point of view, including some nostalgic visual filters and an overhaul of the game’s visual cues for health and other mechanics. One of the more notable additions is the “90s filter” that players can toggle, which seeks to make the game look more like it did when the series was in its heyday.

Silent Hill 2 Remake on a CRT is a Nostalgic Novelty of the Past

That seemingly wasn’t enough for Reddit user Honest_Brain_2385, however, as they went above and beyond to connect their PS5 to a CRT screen and play theSilent Hill 2remake on it. Not only that, but they even switched off many of the game’s HUD settings, like the visual filters for low health, in-game tutorials, and on-screen help to create what they call the “true” 90s mode.

Other fans chimed in with their takes on the player’s efforts and the official filters provided by developer Bloober Team, with some stating that the VHS filter in the game felt a little too over the top for their tastes. Despite some of the optional filters seeking to emulate the classic look, the originalSilent Hill 2has numerous visual elements that differ from the remake.

Silent Hill 2on the PlayStation 2had an abundance of film grain on the screen at a lot of points to make things appear much spookier, and the screen would appear to be covered in static when the player was at low health. These features are missing from the remake, likely in the name of realism and to mesh better with the new over-the-shoulder view.

Despite lacking these visual elements and the classic fixed-camera perspective of the originalSilent Hill 2,however, the fan’s setup is still a nostalgic display of dedication, as they took the time to get their PS5 running on a CRT to pull off their tribute. Konami seems to understand the appeal of nostalgia, as well, since it’s reportedly opted to includea fixed-perspective camera option in theMetal Gear Solid 3remakethat is currently in the works.
