In October 2024,Spider-Man actor Holland joined Nolan’s next movie, which is rumored to be set in the 1920s and center on vampires. Holland will have to juggle his time between Nolan’s new movie,Spider-Man4, and possiblyAvengers: Doomsday, as all three projects are scheduled to go into production in 2025. Furthermore,Spider-Man 4and Nolan’s next movie will be released just one week apart, meaning they will compete for box office revenue.
Nolan’s next movie is scheduled to be released in theaters on June 15, 2025, withSpider-Man 4slated to premiere one week later on July 14, 2025. AsThe InSneider’s Jeff Sneider reports,Spider-Man 4and Nolan’s next movie will “presumably eat into each other’s box office haul.” This is becauseSpider-Man 4will reportedly lose IMAX and other premium screens to Nolan’s next movie for several weeks. These premium formats are important to a movie’s box office total, as prices for these tickets are more expensive than standard screenings.
Many Reddit users were stunned by Sony’s decision to releaseSpider-Man 4a week after Nolan’s next movie. However, @Unique_Unorqueproposed howSpider-Man 4could be released on more premium formats while buildinghype forAvengers: Secret Wars. “[…] If it’s really successful or well-received by fans, they can do a limited re-release a few months later on premium format screens with a sneak preview ofSecret Wars. Bam, I just made Sony an extra billion,” they wrote.
Sneider also reiterated ongoing rumors about Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield joiningSpider-Man 4. This lines up with reports that theSpider-Man 4plot is moving away from a street-level story, potentially involving Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin, and shifting toward a multiverse story. This has disappointed some fans who were hoping for a more grounded storyinvolving street-level heroes like Daredevil or Jessica Jones.
Of course, the MCU is currently in the Multiverse Saga, so perhaps it was foolish to hopeSpider-Man 4wouldn’t tap into that well, especially after Maguire and Garfield’s appearances helped propelSpider-Man: No Way Hometo over $1 billion at the box office. TheBladeMCU release date delayprompted rumors that Marvel Studios was pushing back projects to focus on Multiverse stories, and if it’s true, fans may have to wait a long time to see Spider-Man fight street-level foes like Kingpin.
