Summary

Last weekend,Star Trekactors and showrunners gathered at New York Comic-Con (NYCC), held at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in New York City. As usual, the panels were jam-packed with updates about the upcoming seasons of the shows in the Paramount+Star Trekuniverse, and fans finally got some exciting information about season 3 ofStar Trek: Strange New Worlds.

Information about the upcoming season of the Paramount+ prequel toStar Trek: The Original Serieshas been sparse since thebig reveals at San Diego Comic-Conin July. Fans have had little to go on other than some behind the scenes photos from the cast and the occasional update from the showrunners. The clips and behind the scenes photos confirmed that the entire bridge crew of the Enterprise will be back in season 3, but other than that, fans have been kept guessing. Luckily, theygot some exciting answers– and even more to speculate about – at NYCC, including three big reveals.

An Exclusive Clip Depicts an Epic Battle

During Paramount+‘sStar Trekuniverse panel at the convention, fans got their second look at an actual scene from season 3. The three-minute clip picks up approximately where season 2 left off, with the Enterprise and its crew engaged in a brutal battle, surrounded by Gorn ships. Anson Mount’s Captain Pike looks uncharacteristically overwhelmed as Una repeatedly asks for orders.

After asking his crew to come up with options for saving their compatriots, who’ve been abducted by the Gorn, the bridge crew rattles off multiple brilliant ideas, in iconicStar Trekfashion. After ruling out several of them, they finally land on attaching a beacon to an unarmed torpedo, and shooting it at the Gorn ship.

The clip confirmed what fans assumed – that the third season will pick up where the classically Trek cliffhanger from season 2 left off. It also confirms that, at least the beginning of season 3, will feature the escalating conflict with the Gorn. If this scene is representative of the season, it promises to be an action-packed ride.

New Cast Member Revealed

Perhaps the most exciting news of the weekend was the announcement thatOur Flag Means DeathandJumanji: The Next LevelactorRhys Darby will join the castin a mystery guest role. Showrunners hinted that Darby is portraying a LegacyStar Trekcharacter, but wouldn’t say more, sparking speculation throughout the fandom.

Strange New Worldshas already shown fans what severalTOScharacters were up to in the years before Kirk took over the Enterprise. However, there are plenty of major and minor characters fans haven’t encountered yet, most notably, Leonard “Bones” McCoy, the Enterprise’s Chief Medical Officer.

Odd Hints About the Stories in Season 3

During a panel withStrange New Worldsshowrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers and cast members Ethan Peck (Spock) and Carol Kane (Pelia), the moderator asked each of them to describe the show’s third season in just three words. Their choices were interesting, to say the least.

Goldsman replied, “Get to season 4.”

Kane said, “Too much fun.”

Peck’s responded, “History, betrayal, growth.”

But Alonso Myers’ response was, by far, the best: “Dancing, murder, and surprise.”

Given that Jonathan Frakes, who frequently directsStar Trekepisodes as well as stars in them, has alreadyteased a murder mystery episode, Alonso Myers' murder comment makes sense. But dancing? And betrayal? Though the three-word responses didn’t reveal much, they do build even more excitement for season 3.

Fans can expect the first episodes ofStar Trek: Strange New Worldsseason 3 in 2025, though an official release date hasn’t yet been announced.
