OneStardew Valleyplayer has shared their lament over the fate of their beloved Jack-O-Lanterns after the beginning of winter rolled around in their game. Many players adore the carved pumpkin decorations inStardew Valley, whose eerie glow adds a spooky ambiance to farms during fall, but they’re not built to last forever.
Jack-O-Lanterns inStardew Valleyprovide the weakest illumination of any light source in the entire game, but they’re still beloved among the part of the player base that revels in Halloween delights. Players can get their own Jack-O-Lanterns in a variety of ways, from crafting them to plucking them from specific locations around Pelican Town.
As one player recently shared on Reddit, their character awoke on the first day of winter to discover that their five Jack-O-Lanterns had changed significantly, transforming instead into Rotten Plant items. Jack-O-Lanterns begin appearing in Pelican Town on Fall 17, 10 days ahead of theStardew ValleySpirit’s Eve festival, and can be picked up from in front of three different houses, Pam’s trailer, and Robin’s carpentry shop. Players can also craft their own from a recipe sold at Pierre’s stall during the festival for 2,000g or buy individual Jack-O-Lanterns for 750g apiece, but since the festival takes place on the night before the last day of fall, Jack-o-Lanterns bought there won’t normally last long. This particular player bought the pumpkins directly at the festival stall expecting them to be inorganic light sources and was astonished less than two in-game days later to discover that they’d wasted thousands on extremely temporary decorations.
Stardew Valley Player Devastated Over Loss of Jack-O-Lanterns
Thankfully, some other fans of the game were able to provide helpful hints to keep Jack-O-Lanterns from rotting, such as placing them on a table instead of directly on the ground. Others suggested staying away from Pierre’s festival Jack-O-Lantterns and instead buying the recipe from him. By taking advantage ofStardew Valley’s crafting system, players with the recipe can craft a Jack-O-Lantern at any time, provided they have a torch and a pumpkin to use as ingredients.
Still others have suggested that just because the Jack-O-Lanterns have rotted, it doesn’t mean they’re completely worthless, as players can still use the Rotten Plants as disgusting decorations inside the homes of characters they don’t like. In this case, one player suggested using them to prankStardew ValleyMayor Lewis, a town resident many players came to dislike after finding the taxpayer-funded golden statue of himself that he keeps hidden behind his home.
