Summary

VeteranStarfieldplayers are running into problems with money in the wake of the newShattered SpaceDLC expansion. Their issues withStarfieldreflect a longstanding quirk of Bethesda’s expansive approach to game design.

As one of themost massive open world games around,Starfieldoffers a lot of freedom to the player. Almost immediately after receiving their first spaceship, players are set loose in the Settled Systems to find their fortune. They can choose to follow the story-driven main campaign, and there are good reasons to do so, but ultimately the choice is left in the player’s hands. From choosing how to approach combat, or designing one’s own starship, or where and whether to build one’s own home outpost,Starfieldenshrines a certain free-form approach to player activity that’s emblematic of developer Bethesda’s approach to game design.

Unfortunately, that free-form fortune-seeking has ended up with some players facing a rather fortunate problem: they have too much money. In a post shared with theStarfieldReddit community, player HodgeGodglin complained that the game doesn’t provide enough to spend on. The result is that in the wake of theShattered SpaceDLC expansion, players are sitting on massive piles of credits and unsold merchandise, looking for something interesting to actually buy.

Starfield Players Complain About A Lack of In-Game Money Sinks

In their post, HodgeGodglin showed off a screenshot of their ship’s cargo hold screen, holding a whopping 41 Va’ruun Starshard Particle Beam pistols and a variety of other lootedStarfieldweapons, all worth thousands of credits. The problem is that there’s nothing to spend it on. With most of the best weapons and gear acquired from looting rather than stores, it’s easy to be extremely rich and have nothing to buy.

Some players sympathized with HodgeGodglin, saying that Bethesda games typically have money only be a problem in the earlier stages, if at all. A few players jokingly suggested thatStarfieldplayers are inadvertently roleplaying as “low-key gun runners,” due to the fact that selling looted weapons is one of the best ways to make money in the game due to the sheer selling value concentrated within a fallen foe’s gun.

A few commenters argued that players complaining about being too rich inStarfieldwere simply not engaging enough with the more capital-intensive parts of the game, like ship design and high-end outpost construction. They said those activities will quickly drain most legitimate players' bank accounts rapidly, even as they benefit fromStarfieldoutpostrevenue streams.
