Summary
Indie horror gameUnplaguedis currently free to grab onSteam. This offer is fairly short-lived, givingSteamusers roughly 24 hours to take advantage of it as of this writing.
Offers of temporarily free Steam gamesare a fairly common occurrence on Valve’s storefront. But in most such cases, the free games that are being offered are already out.
In contrast to this practice, indie gameUnplaguedwas treated to a 100% discount on October 10, becomingfree to claim on Steambefore it was even released. And while it was initially listed as debuting on October 11, developer Euphoric Brothers ended up launching it shortly after this discount went live. The 100% price cut does not signal a shift inUnplagued’s business model, with Euphoric Brothers confirming that the offer will only remain live for 24 hours, after which its latest game will become a paid product. How much it will cost from that point onward is currently unclear.
The game itself is amultiplayer horror experiencethat has up to four players step into the shoes of medieval plague doctors, tasking them with eradicating a mysterious disease. To that end, they will have to collect numerous ingredients and experiment with a variety of cauldron recipe combinations in order to discover the right formula for a cure. But doing so will be no mean feat, not least because the game’s world is filled with grotesque monsters eager to make short work of any plague doctor they come in contact with.
The maps inUnplaguedare procedurally generated, adding to its unpredictability and replayability. Every level is created in the style of a medieval village with some surrounding areas.Unplaguedalso features the popularmultiplayer horror game mechanic of proximity chat, allowing players to talk to one another only if they are close. This is meant to enhance the feeling of isolation and add to the game’s overall immersiveness. In a Steam post commemoratingUnplagued’s release, Euphoric Brothers revealed that its latest project will keep receiving updates in the future.
Unplaguedhas arrived just in time to offer some spooky gaming sessions in the run-up to Halloween 2024. The game’s premise might appeal to fans ofPathologic, a cult-classic open-world horror RPG that tasks players with saving a rural town from a terrible plague. On that note,Pathologic 3has just been announcedahead ofUnplagued’s release, though it is not scheduled to hit the market until sometime in 2025.
