Summary

Some players have sunk thousands of hours intoDayZ. PvP fans as well as thoselooking for a cooperative gamewill find themselves at home withDayZ, and like a lot of zombie titles, it’s great to see threats beyond the undead, like the environment, starvation, and of course humans, keep the player on their toes.

Now, however, the newFrostlineDLC has come to change the severity of the game, and the new map of Sakhal brings with it a good deal of frozen threats like never before. 1Item Quality Is Essential

Crafted Items Keep Their Sources' Quality

Item quality deteriorates with use inDayz, and inFrostline, where resources can be more scarce than ever, it’s important to get the most out of every item one can without banking on finding a repair kit, whether that’s something as simple as a pocket knife oran advanced assault rifle.

Items crafted with pristine goods will subsequently be pristine themselves. This is definitely something to keep in mind when crafting because not even repair kits can take an item back up to pristine quality once it’s gone.

2Body Temperature Affects Food Items

A Warm Player Will Bring Cold Food Temps Up

Following the tradition of other survival gamesset in cooler climes, cold is a fearsome threat inDayZ Frostline. If players eat something chilly or frozen, they will start to cool down, and become more susceptible to the cold.

But, for players who stick close to a campfire and drastically increase their body temperature, they will find that cool items slowly rise in temperature to the normal baseline, making otherwise inedible food products suddenly perfect.

3Be Aware Of Your Surroundings

Looting And Drinking Leaves You Vulnerable

DayZis a game that leaves its biggest unknown - other humans - in the hands of the players. Each player that’s come across could be afriend or a foein this title, but it’s always best to meet with other survivors on equal footing.

If players are caught unawares while drinking from a well or looting, an especially dangerous task considering wells are often out in the more exposed sections of Sakhal, a player could kill you and loot you before you have the chance to de-escalate or turn your weapon on them.

4Insulation Is Vital

Heat Buffs Mean Nothing If Your Clothes Are Bad

Campfires provide a powerful buff in this game, and can easily keep players warm against some of the more lethal temperatures that this frigid volcanic isle drops to, but it’s all for naught if the insulation of the player’s clothing is too low.

If clothes cannot retain heat, then the cold will seep in even if there’s a nearby heat source such as a campfire. One of the first things on players' priority list should be finding insulating clothes.

5Prioritize Larger Towns

The Best Loot Is Found In Unique Buildings

Like a lot ofsurvival games set in cities, there is plenty of good loot to be found in the abandoned husks of old human civilization. Part of what makes the post-apocalyptic survival genre so charming is that finding something as simple as a parka or a knife can be a godsend.

For players looking for a few godsends to keep the looters away, items like powerful guns can usually be found in military tents or police stations, but they only spawn in the larger towns. If players aren’t lucky enough to spawn in one, there are a few along the coast to try and get to ASAP.

6Be Careful When Fleeing

It’s Easy To Get Lost In The Wilds

There’s no shame in admitting that sometimes inFrostline, there will be fights that are too tough. Too many wolves have players surrounded, too many infected nearby, too many people with guns trying to take the one rusty fork and a handful of sticks in one’s inventory.

While it’s okay to run away, if at all possible, try to run away in the direction of familiar territory. In a map like this where the cold can be unforgiving, getting lost and wandering after a fight that left you banged up can spell death just as easily as any looter’s gun can.

7Stick To The Coast At First

The Inland Holds Many Dangers

Post-apocalyptic survival games often hold a gradient of difficulty. Starting areas will, typically, not be as intense as more distant ones, even if the game overall is still quite a challenge.

This is precisely the case inFrostline. All spawn points are within towns along the coast of the isle, and the masses of infected get denser as players go further inland, or risk a boat to explore the outer isles. There will be time to find the loot and explore these locations, but when getting the basics down pat, it’s best to stick to the coast of Sakhal.
