Summary
Terrifier 3has already begun slashing up the box office, and it’s been revealed that the independent horror movie has just dethronedJoker: Folie A Deuxfrom the number one spot. Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck is no longer the number one clown when it comes to the box office: Art the Clown has taken Arthur’s crown.
The third film in Damien Leone’s now-iconic independenthorrorfranchise has been causing something of a stir. It was already reported that peopleleft the movie’s opening screeningin the United Kingdom after the movie’s first few minutes because it was just too intense to sit through. However, these reports have just made people want to go and see the film even more than before. People are heading to the cinemas in their droves to see what horrors Art the Clown gets up to inTerrifier 3, which is quickly becoming the surprise hit of 2024.
It’s been revealed thatTerrifier 3has opened well ahead of expectations. According toThe Hollywood Reporter, Damien Leone’s latest picture opened with an estimated $18.2 million from just 1,988 theaters in the United States. This means that the film now sits in the number one spot at the United States box office, which some experts thought could happen, but it’s still doing much better than many people expected it would perform.
The only movie to come close toTerrifier 3isThe Wild Robot, which made another $13.4 million in its third week. The Wild Robotwas in 3,854 cinemas in the United States, and so far, it has made an impressive $148.5 million worldwide. It’s not so good forTodd Phillips’Jokersequel, which seems like it’s dropping off a cliff as far as its box office takings are concerned.
Joker: Folie A Deux’sdisappointing box officetakings (it only made $7 million this week in the United States), is especially poor given that it was in 4,102 theaters. This marks a huge decline for the film at the box office.Joker: Folie A Deuxhas had an 81 percent drop off, which is a record. That’s not the kind of record that Warner Bros. Pictures and Todd Phillips wanted to break when this sequel opened to the public.
Back toTerrifier 3, the movie was made on a shoestring budget of just $5 million. However, that was a lot more than the previous two movies in the iconic independent horror franchise. One of the main reasons why more money was put into this particular entry in theTerrifierfranchise was because Cineverse acquired the movie’s marketing rights for $5 million. The film cost $2 million to make, which was still quite a lot more than Terrifier 2’s budget of $250,000. It’s nice to see that the film has managed to make more than just its money back. It’s no wonder they’realready working onTerrifier 4.
It’ll be fascinating to see whether people outside the United States go to the cinema to watch Art the Clown’s latest picture. So far, the movie has done well in France. It opened in the number one spot at the French box office, with 45,000 admissions on its first day, which was more than the likes of other bigger studio-back horror movies,SmileandSaw X.
Terrifier 3is in selected cinemas in the United States right now.
