Summary
The Beginning After The Endannounced the production of an anime to be released in 2025, and fans are wondering what might be changing during the adaptation of the Webtoon (Manhwa) and Light Novels to the streaming platforms. With the advancement of animation, it has become more and more possible to adapt Japanese and Korean comic series with quite a lot of accuracy, and this is something that will only get better with time.
In many cases, when a manga/manhwa series is adapted to animation, fans who have been following the printed (or webtoon in this case) versions of the series become anxious because they don’t want to see too many drastic changes between the two versions. But in other cases, they are excited since they are about to witness their favorite characters becoming animated for the first time. So, let’s analyze things carefully: Is change something that bad? Take a look at this list of 4 thingsTBATEanime might do differently than the Manhwa, and see for yourselves.
The Art Style Looks More Like Anime
The Most Noticeable Change From Manhwa And LN To Anime
In the trailer, we seea distinguishable shift in the style, tones become darker, backgrounds are more detailed, and facial expressions, of course, become more noticeable: it’s animation after all. In other words: this particular change will be good for the series. Though neither Fuyuki 23 (the original artist) nor Eginhardt (the current penciler of the series) are involved in the project, the art direction is in charge of Masami Sueoka, known from the Detective Conan and Meguru series.
Suekoa is a seasoned artist, who knows all the nooks and crannies of the animation industry and will surely deliver a high-quality product. Fans could expect absolute fidelity since Korean-American author Turtle Me (creator ofTBATE) is also participating in the direction of the project.
We Will See More Of Arthur’s Past Life
The Webtoon Didn’t Focus Too Much On King Grey
Another noticeable change we see in the trailer is that we see more of King Grey/Arthur Leywyn’s past life. Clearly set in a dystopian world ridden with war, the Manhwa series barely showcased anything of this mysterious figure before it got betrayed, killed, and reincarnated in a world of Sword and Sorcery.
It is a good change though, perhaps the author wanted to show more of his MC’s past life before he became a child again, sowe are presented with a darker setting, with a more mature-looking King Grey than that of the webtoon, but more aligned with what can be read in the Light Novel series. Understanding this character is key to being able to follow Arthur’s development as the protector of Dicathen, so, seeing more of Grey in the trailer is a welcome change, to be honest.
The Character Of Sylphy Wasn’t Revealed Yet
Arthur’s Bond, A Really Important Piece Of The Playboard
Sylphy is Arthur’s Bond, a critical character that connects him to the fate of the world, and is also his guardian “animal.” To avoid diving into spoilers, we could say she is a shapeshifting sort of being. But the trailer didn’t show Sylphy, and that might be okay, since she appears further down the plot, after Arthur gets separated from his family for the first time.
Some fans might see this as a bad sign, but such a major reveal on the first teaser trailer wouldn’t have been a wise decision on the producers' end. It’s okay to save something for later, and the same can be said about Tessia, another important character that will mark Arthur’s life and determine his evolution as a character. But, could these characters in the series look radically different from the originals? The answer might be right in plain sight:Sylphy’s design has changed greatlythroughout her life (she’s a shapeshifter after all) and in the Light Novels her artwork is considerably different from that we see in the Webtoon, so expect some changes as well this time.
The Order Of The Events Might Be Subject To Change
Story Progression Will Be Faster
A necessary change in every adaptation from paper to animation is the shortening of certain events to avoid entering production creep. Footage and length are essential when producing a series, and the duration of each chapter should be carefully measured before making the final cut. Sadly, this also means that there might be a flash forward in some of the “non-essential” events in the series. In most fantasy-like/Isekai stories adapted to anime, childhood events and the growth of the character(speaking about maturity and not internal development) are subjected to a cut.
Will that be a problem for the development of the series? It will not, since most of Arthur’s character is forged through what happens after he grows up and discovers the world, and, as we mentioned before, is heavily marked by the fact that he remembers his past life. So, having a flash forward during Arthur’s childhood and jumping right into the action wouldn’t affect the overall construction of the character, nor the development of the story. But, since Turtle Me is supervising the screenplay and participating in the production, we can expect the story will be treated optimally, and the source material respected as much as possible.
TheBeginning After The Endwill be released at a yet-to-be-confirmed date in 2025 and will be streamed through Crunchyroll.
