Summary
The hardcore roguelite FPSWitchfireputs players in the role of a witch hunter, or Preyer, taking on a powerful witch and her minions. The power of the opposition means the witch hunter will require more than just cold steel to get the job done. Yet, when all else fails, guns are the tool hunters will rely on the most.
With even more guns added following the Ghost Galleon update, there’s now a good selection of firearms for a Preyer to load up with. Most weapons in the game are viableonce players have enough experiencewith them.
However, since players can also load up with spells, relics, rings and fetishes, there are some powerful synergies available that make some weapons a better choice than others. These weapons are the best inWitchfirewhen used effectively.
10Rotweaver
Fully-Automatic Pistol
TheRotweavermay have the lowest per-shot damage of any weapon inWitchfire, but with the highest rate of fire and the biggest clip, it more than makes up for it. Once it’s beenupgraded to higher Mysterium levels, it’s also highly effective at spreading Decay.
Despite that small damage number, the Rotweaver will sap enemy health bars fast. Once players start spreading Decay around, they can regenerate bullets from kills as well. This makes it great for maintaining damage and creating potent elemental combos.
9Striga
Stake Thrower
The stake-throwingStrigais both powerful and fun to use. It’s capable of sending smaller enemies flying, and even pinning them to walls. This weapon would rank much higher on this list if it wasn’t for its biggest flaw — in the heat of combat, it’s difficult to use.
If that sounds like a skill issue, it is. However, due to the firing mechanism and projectile travel time, the Striga will prove to be a difficult weapon to master, even for players who are used to using marksman rifles and snipers. To balance that out, the Striga’s damage output is high, and the weapon fires faster than might be expected, comparable to a bolt action rifle.
8Hunger
Hard-Hitting Handgun
Hungeris a revolver with a high damageoutput and hard to master but satisfying to execute mechanics. At higher Mysterium upgrade levels, each critical hit before reloading grants a charged bullet in the next magazine that deals more damage.
As the gun is upgraded, more crits before reloading means more damage per charged bullet. Hitting all six shots as critical hits gives even more powerful bonuses, making the first shot of the next magazine a guaranteed crit that also freezes enemies.
Hitting all those critical shots is easier said than done, but for players who want to focus on weak spots & critical damage, the Hunger is a must-have weapon.
7Hailstorm
Devastating Sniper Rifle
Hailstormhas the highest base damage number of any non-demonic weapon in the game. Due to its core mechanic, it also has a very low ammo count. With Hailstorm, getting three consecutive critical hits refunds two bullets to the current magazine.
This effect upgrades with further thorugh Mysterium levels, giving the player improved handling and zoom distance, lower flinch, and a light homing effect on bullets. At max upgrades, players also trigger afreezing shockwaveon the third crit. The downside is that any misses or manual reloads reset the buff.
That means that Hailstorm is devastating with consecutive crits, but players will find themselves out of ammo immediately if they miss too many shots. There’s also a stamina cost for shooting while aiming. These are two big reasons why this weapon is not higher on the list.
6Vulture
Bloodthirsty Crossbow
Vulturewas the firstdemonic weaponavailable inWitchfire, before the recent updates added more options. Its high-damage bolts seek out additional targets after a hit, making it a highly effective weapon for getting out of situations where players find themselves outnumbered.
The consumption of demonic weapon ammo means the Vulture can’t be used as freely as most main weapons. It’s mostly useful as a get out of jail free card for hordes that get out of hand, or if players need to pile damage onto a boss while mitigating adds.
5Ricochet
Mob Killing Auto Rifle
TheRicochetis an auto rifle that can mark targets and ricochet bullets between them. With Mysterium upgrade levels, aiming down sights at an enemy tags them. Three enemies can be tagged, then any hits on any one tagged enemy will ricochet to the other two.
Further upgrade levels give a stun effect to the first hit, which helps make Ricochet an effective weapon for dealing with mobs of smaller enemies. Ricochet is a nice, straightforward weapon to use, with a good clip size and fewer worries about perfect accuracy than other options.
4Hypnosis
High Skill Cap Rifle
Hypnosisis a bolt-action rifle that can deal huge damage in the hands of a patient player. Aiming down sights with Hypnosis charges the shot with extra damage, increasing the longer a player aims.
Further upgrades weight the damage toward the end of the charge, giving perfectly-timed shots a massive damage boost. Once the weapon is fully upgraded, pulling off consecutive perfect shots deals additional lightning damage, too.
That said, having the patience to wait for a shotwhen under the pressure of enemy attacks isn’t the easiest strategy to pull off. The damage boost with Hypnosis is worth the effort, though.
3Falling Star
Demonic Grenade Launcher
TheFalling Staris a newer addition toWitchfire, and it’s a powerful one. This demonic weapon has the highest base damage in the game, and deals explosive splash damage. As if that wasn’t enough, players can fire at an enemy while aiming down sights and grenades will home in on that enemy.
As with the other demonic weapons, there are no Mysterium upgrades for the Falling Star. That said, with its destructive base power level, it doesn’t really need them. The other thing to consider is that players can damage themselves with the explosions from Falling Star, so it’s best used at range.
2Hangfire
Explosive Hand Cannon
TheHangfirehand cannon is one of the most fun weapons to use inWitchfire. With a mechanicthat seems like it camestraight from theBorderlandsuniverse, the Hangfire shoots shells that stick in their target and explode when the player reloads.
Higher Mysterium upgrade levels make the weapon really shine. The second upgrade level increases the damage for each enemy with a shot stuck in them. The third level makes explosions Burn enemies, which offers great synergy for Burn-focused builds and elemental combos.
The utility of the elemental damage along with its ease-of-use makes the Hangfire a more popular choice than the other hand cannon option, Hunger.
1Psychopomp
Supreme Shotgun
ThePsychopompshotgun offers a high-damage, high-risk, up-close fighting style that feels great to pull off. Each charged melee kill refunds half the weapon’s magazine, and at the final Mysterium upgrade level, kills restore players' charged melee.
This lends itself to a playstyle of getting in enemies' faces and dealing big damage quickly, without having to stop and reload. Each consecutive hit with this weapon will also deal more damage to enemies, which means the Pyschopomp can help deal with tankier foes.
Getting into melee range with enemies is a big risk inWitchfire, though. That means that Psychopomp pairs best with crowd-control spells like Shockwave or Frost Cone. Once players get into the rhythm of using Pyschopomp, though, the fast and brutal playstyle is a lot of fun.
