DespiteRe:Zero’scast of unique characters, many of them also happen to be very mysterious in their actions, particularly when dealing with some of the main protagonists, such as Subaru and Emilia. These mysterious individuals often have hidden motives or unclear backgrounds that have made the paths they tread in theRe:Zeroanime intriguing to audiences.
6Al
A Goofy Knight Who Does Not Remove His Helmet
Of all the knights inthe Royal Selection candidates, the knight of the evil Priscilla Barielle,Al, ranks as the most mysterious. Although his origins are unknown, Al is a knight who opts to never remove his helmet despite his fun and outgoing personality being fully displayed beneath it.
Along with his hidden appearance, the fact that such a goofy individual came into the service of a vile princess such as Priscilla is baffling, considering the apparent juxtaposition of the two characters. While only appearing in a couple of episodes in season 1, Al has lots to be explored, and the wacky knight sure to have more to him than meets the eye.
5Roswaal L. Mathers
A Witch Of Greed Follower Who Has His Motives
Despite being Emilia’s backer, Roswaal has had many ulterior motives while backing the half-elf, with his affiliation with the Witch of Greed, Echidna, leading them to stir up chaos, particularly in season 2, when the character holds the Sanctuary hostage. While losing his bet with Subaru leads to Roswaal backing Emilia’s every action, the powerful mage still harbors ambitions that may reveal themselves in later seasons.
4Echidna
A Greedy Witch Who Aspires For Knowledge
The main antagonist of season 2 brought much conflict and tension to the anime, operating as a source of information for Subaru and Emilia during their escapades in the Sanctuary.Throughout the Sanctuary arc,Echidnais a mystery to audiences and the protagonists, with the witch’s greedy nature enabling her to mask her personality when interacting with Subaru and Emilia.
Echidna often changes her tune depending on the situation; she is aware of her deceitful words and half-truths, which set events in motion that feed her greed for information and knowledge.
3Regulus Corneas
A Witch Cult Member Who Has Lived For Hundreds Of Years
The anime’s most prominent Sin Archbishop isRegulus Corneas, the Sin Archbishop of Greed.As Subaru ventures forth into the worldofRe:Zero, Regulus puts a stop to many of his plans, particularly in his grand entrance. In one of Regulus' first scenes, the character helps ambush Crusch Karsten, Rem, and a battalion of soldiers, causing chaos that significantly impacts the proceedings and the trajectory of several characters.
While much about Regulus is a mystery, he appears in Emilia’s flashbacks, indicating that the Sin Archbishop is several hundred years old. As part of a radical faction of the Witch’s Cult, Regulus' motives and actions are of an evil nature, although his reasoning behind his madness, along with the Witch’s Cult’s specific goals, are up in the air.
2Pandora
A Mysterious Witch Who Is In Cahoots With The Witch Cult
While only appearing in a select few scenes,Pandorais shown to bea frightening and powerful witchwho has lived for hundreds of years. Seen in Emilia’s flashbacks, the young heroine runs into Pandora in Elior Forest, where the monotone witch plays a role in its destruction as she antagonizes Emilia, leading to the forest becoming frozen.
In her pursuit, Pandora aims to access the seal in the forest, although its contents, and why Pandora desires what resides inside, are yet to be revealed. Despite her unexplained connection to the Witch’s Cult, Pandora is shown to be on an entirely different level, as she vanquishes Regulus from Elior Forest without hesitation, showcasing the wealth of power at the obscure witch’s disposal.
1Satella
The Witch Of Envy Who Has A Stranglehold On Subaru
As one of the overarching antagonists ofRe:Zero,Satellapresided over several events both before Subaru joined their world and after his first appearance; she was the one to bring him to Lugunica. Shrouded in mystery,Satella was the individual who wreaked havocon society, causing the Great Calamity, resulting in the mass destruction of over half the world.
While her motives for causing chaos are unknown, Satella’s reasoning for pulling Subaru into their world remains a mystery as well. However, Satella keeps a grip on the protagonist in order to stop Subaru from explaining his occurrence to his newfound friends. Alongside the Subaru conundrum, Emilia’s similar appearance to Satella prompts much confusion, leading Emilia to receive hate from citizens despite their connection remaining a mystery.
