Summary

Gamers looking to upgrade to the soon-to-be-releasedPlayStation 5 Pronow have a new potential drawback to consider: existing PS5 Slim console covers might not fit on the new system. Sony finally confirmed months of rumor and speculation by announcing thePlayStation 5 Pro, an upgraded version of the current PS5 with enhanced technical capabilities, during a special PlayStation livestream back in September. So far, the PS5 Pro is already in high demand at outlets like Amazon ahead of its November 7 street date, as a growing list of already-hit games are revealing how they will be enhanced by the new hardware.

Not everyone is on board with the PlayStation 5 Pro, with its hefty $700 price point drawing a fair deal of controversy. Additionally, it would later be confirmed that thePS5 Pro won’t include a built-in disk drive. This has caused an increase in sales for the previously released Disc Drive For PS5 Digital Edition Consoles, even as it increases the criticism surrounding the PS5 Pro’s massive price tag by requiring gamers who prefer physical media to digital downloads to spend an extra $80 to play their games on the newer system.

At least the older disk drives will work with the upcoming PlayStation 5 Pro, which might not be the case for gamers hoping to customize their new console with an alternate faceplate. Reddit user Zrorro claims to havegotten their hands on a PS5 Probefore its November 7 launch, and attempted to fit it with some Cobalt Blue PS5 Slim faceplates they already had on hand. While the bottom plates fit on the PS5 Pro without issue, Zrorro says that the top plates can’t be attached due to the connecting teeth being in a slightly different position than they are on the PlayStation 5 Slim.

PlayStation 5 Slim Faceplates Won’t Fit on PS5 Pro

Sony hasn’t officially verified whether the existing PS5 Slim faceplates are compatible with the upcoming PS5 Pro model, but it should be noted that thePlayStation Directstore makes no mention of them fitting on the PS5 Pro on its page. Additionally, an infographic on the PS5 Pro’s JapaneseAmazonpage also indicates that the faceplates won’t fit on the new model. This means that anyone looking to give their newPS5 Pro a different color schemefrom the standard white might not be able to do so with their existing PS5 faceplates.

This isn’t to say that the PlayStation 5 Pro won’t have any variety at launch, as Sony is selling aspecial-edition 30th Anniversary PS5 Pro consoleand controller in the colors of the original PlayStation. However, anyone wishing for aPlayStation 5 Prosystem in a more varied color like black or cobalt blue might have to wait until Sony or a third-party manufacturer releases new faceplates that will fit the beefed-up console.
