Totems are a kind of collectible inUntil Dawnthat act as warnings about what you can expect if you make certain choices. With over 30 ways that the characters can die, it’s helpful to have some kind of guidance as to what you should do next. While the original had five different types of Totems you can find, the Remake added a new kind - Hunger - which shows a different kind of premonition.
Each time a character picks up a Totem, they’ll see some kind of vision that points to a possible character’s death or a choice you should make depending on the type of Totem you find. The Totem color indicates what you’ll see - ranging from a possible way a character can die to what choice you should make when you’re presented with it. There are 36 in total, and while some can be found without much fuss, you’ll need to look for others in out-of-the-way paths inUntil Dawn.
Prologue Totems
There’s only one Totem to find in the Prologue,the first Death (Black) Totem, which can be found while you’re playing as Beth. When you are able to move around with her for the first time, look for a door on your left you can open. Follow the path through until you reach the outside and go down the stairs. Follow the snowy path up to the small, broken fence, and you’ll see it lying just in front of this fence at the end of the path.
Chapter 1 Totems
Like the Prologue, there’s also only one Totem in Chapter 1, but this time it’s the first Guidance (Yellow) Totem. When you reach the cable car station while playing as Sam, turn left and head toward the small area where you may see some cars parked. The Totem is lying against the fence closest to the forest.
Chapter 2 has a total of 6 Totems to find.
Loss Totem 1 Location
You can find this Totem while playing as Chris. When you first enter the lodge, you’ll be in the garage. There are two doors ahead of you that lead out, but before you go through them, go to the far right side of the garage and look behind the large shelves. The Totem is hidden here.
Guidance Totem 2 Location
Still playing as Chris while you’re in the lodge, this Totem can be found upstairs. You’ll reach a small landing area with a railing, and the bathroom will be just ahead of you. Before you enter the bathroom, turn left and look for the Totem on the floor in between the furniture in this area.
Danger Totem 1 Location
When in control of Mike and just after he and Jess get kicked out of the lodge, wait before you go down the stairs. Instead, walk around them and follow the balcony until you can’t anymore. This Totem will be nestled in front of some chairs and a table.
Fortune Totem 1 Location
After Mike and Jess drop into the mines, you’ll have topass a quick time eventto stop a mine cart from hitting both of them. After this scene, follow the railway tracks straight to find the Totem at the very end of the pathway.
Loss Totem 2 Location
Once Jess and Mike are back on the snowy path, Mike will get spooked by a bird. After this scene has played out, turn around and backtrack slightly. Look to your left to find this Totem between some trees.
Death Totem 2 Location
You’ll find this Totem when playing as Matt when he and Emily are looking for her bag. At some point on the path, you’ll reach an open area with a picnic table right in the middle of it. Turn around and look behind this table to find the Totem between some bushes.
Chapter 3 has a total of 3 Totems to find.
Hunger Totem 1 Location
You’ll be in control of Mike when you find this Totem. After Jess disappears and Mike is looking for her, you’ll see a broken-down truck on the path. Go to the small area left of this truck to find your first Hunger Totem.
Guidance Totem 3 Location
Once Mike has reunited with Jess, you’ll come to a fork in the road. Take the left pathway, and backtrack slightly on this pathway to find this Totem.
Guidance Totem 4 Location
You’ll find this Totem when you take control ofAshley just after the seance. Follow Chris down the stairs, and when you reach the bottom, immediately turn right. The Totem is on the floor in front of the stairs in this small room.
Chapter 4 has a total of 3 Totems to find.
Fortune Totem 2 Location
When Mike chases after Jess when she’s been grabbed, you’ll come up to a large barn after succeeding (or failing) a series of quick-time events. There’s a small set of stairs to your right that you need to go down. To find the Totem, go down these stairs and look for a small room on your right.
Hunger Totem 2 Location
When Mike’s chasing after the Stranger, look out for a large bridge-like structure with stairs leading up. Once you climb up the first small flight of stairs, turn left immediately to find a secret tunnel that leads to the next Hunger Totem.
Death Totem 3 Location
Playing as Chris looking for Ashley after she gets kidnapped by the Psycho, you’ll find this Totem outside. Follow the snowy path until you see a larger open area on your right, and climb up the small hill to get the Totem at the top.
Chapter 5 has a total of 4 Totems to find.
Danger Totem 2 Location
When Mike first reaches the Sanatorium, head toward the fountain outside and go around it to the left. The Totem can be found alongside a small path next to a large fence.
Guidance Totem 5 Location
When you go down the stairs to the morgue with Mike, turn leftafter he pulls the machete from the operating table. Continue hanging left, and the Totem can be found next to some privacy dividers.
Danger Totem 3 Location
Right when you start playing as Matt, follow Emily down the small hill. When you reach the large open area in front of the cable car station, hang right and follow the small fence until you reach an opening in it. The Totem is behind the fence here.
Guidance Totem 6 Location
After you’ve shimmied around the tower as Matt, walk up the small staircase, turn right, and head inside the small shed. The Totem is here.
Chapter 6 has a total of 3 Totems to find.
Danger Totem 4 Location
When you’vereached the ranger tower with Emily, before going up the stairs, look for a snowy pathway to the right. Follow the pathway and yield right to find the Totem in a small location near a cliff.
Loss Totem 3 Location
When you’ve reached the top of the tower, you need to walk along the overhanging balcony outside to switch the power on. Walk around the whole walkway here to find this Totem in a corner.
Hunger Totem 3 Location
You’ll be playing as Ashley when you find this Totem. Just as you reach the old hotel under the lodge, you’ll come across a doorway where you may turn left or right. Turn right here and follow the corridor to the end to find this Totem.
Chapter 7 has a total of 2 Totems to find.
Loss Totem 4 Location
When playing as Emily in the mines, you’ll need to release a minecart to break through a large door and continue forward. To find this Totem, continue up the path past this cart until you may’t go further.
Death Totem 4 Location
After you fall through the floor as Emily in the mines, continue forward until you reach an old railway covered with wooden planks. You’ll be able to go left or right here, and you need to follow the path left to the end to find the Totem.
Chapter 8 Totems
Chapter 8 also has a total of 2 Totems to find.
Fortune Totem 3 Location
After the Stranger pushes Emily further down the mine and she’s holding a flare, you’ll need to drop down a small ledge to continue forward. Drop down the ledge, but go right first and follow the path to find this Totem.
Danger Totem 5 Location
This one is also found while Emily is in the mines. Just before you go through the small crack in the wall and proceed with her chase scene, you’ll see the Totem lying on the floor slightly to the left of the room. If you follow the path, you’re able to’t miss it.
Chapter 9 Totems
There are a total of 7 Totems to find in Chapter 9.
Loss Totem 5 Location
When you’ve reached the Sanatorium Chapel with Mike, walk around to the right side of the room. Continue right to find a small room at the back of the Chapel, and the Totem is inside.
Hunger Totem 4 Location
After getting the previous Totem, backtrack through the Chapel and head through the first gate on your right. You’ll find the Makeshift Graveyard clue outside here, but walk around the graveyard and follow the path until you can’t anymore. You’ll find the Totem among some more graves here.
Death Totem 5 Location
When you go up the stairs and into the Psychiatric Ward with Mike, follow the path through the rooms and around the debris in front of you. When you exit the second room, head through the door on your left. The Totem is behind some privacy dividers in this room.
Loss Totem 6 Location
As Ashley, when the group is looking for another way to the Sanatorium, you’ll reach a part where Sam is struggling to get through the large metal doors. Before you help her, turn around and follow the corridor to the back of the room. The Totem is lying here.
Fortune Totem 4 Location
When Ashley is looking for the othersand hears a strange voice, choose to investigate it. Follow the path until you reach a doorway to a new corridor, and turn left. The Totem is at the end of this pathway.
Death Totem 6 Location
When you’ve scaled the rocky wall in the mine as Sam, take an immediate left to find the Totem.
Hunger Totem 5 Location
Continue following the path forward in the mine with Sam, and you’ll reach some shallow water. The water will split into two paths as you follow it, and when you reach this point, take the left path to find the Totem at the end of it.
Chapter 10 holds the last 4 Totems you can find.
Danger Totem 6 Location
When you climb out of the water with Sam while looking for Josh, instead of opening the door to get to him, turn left and go up the hill (follow the railway). The Totem is at the end of this pathway. Alternatively, you’re able to also find this Totem with Josh when you’re following Mike, just head straight instead of getting into the water with him.
Fortune Totem 5 Location
After Sam and Mike find Josh, you’ll have an opportunity to play as Josh. When you take control of him, immediately turn around and head through the small broken-down building. Turn left to find this Totem hiding in a corner.
Fortune Totem 6 Location
In order to find this Totem, you need to make sure that Jess and/or Matt have survived up to this point in the game. When you take control of Matt, follow the path forward and take the first left you can. Continue on the path to locate this Totem.
Hunger Totem 6 Location
When you’re outside and making your way back to the lodge with Sam, you’ll have to cross a small lake. After you leave the lake, take an immediate left turn to find the final Totem inUntil Dawn.
