Summary
There have been reports suggesting that Tom Hardy’s Venom could appear inAvengers: Secret Wars, and the character’s potential involvement in what could become theMarvel Cinematic Universe’s(MCU) biggest movie ever might be a vital piece of the puzzle. People who’ve read the originalSecret Warscomic book run will understand why Venom’s inclusion in theMCU’sversion of the story could be essential in making the whole thing work.
Over the years, Venom has become one of Peter Parker’s (aka Spider-Man’s) most iconic villains. His introduction in live-action was inSam Raimi’sSpider-Man 3,where Topher Grace played the character. That particular version of the character hasn’t stood the test of time. However, Venom - a.k.a. Eddie Brock - has since become a household name thanks to Tom Hardy’s performances as the iconic Marvel Comics character in the likes ofVenom,Venom: Let There Be Carnage, and he’s about to play the Symbiote once again inVernon: The Last Dance, which is said to be his final performance in the role. That said, rumors suggest that Tom Hardy could be about to crossover as Venom into the MCU, which would be exciting and critical in making the whole Secret Wars storyline work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Why would Venom’s involvement in the MCU’s Avengers: Secret Wars be significant?
The big question here is, why is Venom crossing over into the MCU so vital forAvengers: Secret Wars’plot? Well, it all depends on whether Marvel Studios is looking to adapt the comic book’s original plotline for the upcoming Avengers film. In Marvel Comics' original 1984 Secret Wars comic book run, Peter Parker ended up beingbonded with the alien Symbiote, which is why he’s in the iconic black Spider-Man costume. This all happens when Spider-Man tries to fix his suit after it’s damaged in a battle. However, he uses an unfamiliar piece of technology to fix his costume, which releases the Venom symbiote and the alien bonds with Peter and transforms the iconic red and blue Spider-Man suit into the black one fans have become so familiar with over the years.
Peter Parker used the suit without realizing the dangers until it was too late. It all results in Peter going to the leader of the Fantastic Four and the smartest person he knows, Reed Richards, for help. Reed attempts to remove the Symbiote from Peter’s suit, which works. However, Venom bonds with Eddie Brock, who’s become pretty much synonymous with Venom over the years, and they go on to become one of Spider-Man’s most notorious foes.
What’s interesting about theSecret Warscomic book plotis that it introduced readers to Venom, who plays a key part in the story’s plot. Therefore, it would make perfect sense to bring the character intoAvengers: Secret Wars’plot. It has also been reported that Kevin Feige is open to the idea of having Tom Hardy play the character in the MCU, and fans have really connected with the British actor’s portrayal of the iconic Marvel villain over the years, so why not have him play an essential part inAvengers: Secret Wars’story? It just makes perfect sense.
What has Tom Hardy said about returning as Venom?
So, Venom should really be part of the upcomingAvengers: Secret Warsfilm. However, what has Tom Hardy said about playing the character again afterVenom: The Last Dance? Does he even want to return to play the role? Well, according to a post he shared viaInstagram, it seems as though histime playing the role is doneafter the release ofVenom: The Last Dance. Here’s what he said to say on the matter:
That’s all she wrote for me and the big guy we promise to make this the best of them all. We’ve loved making these. Thankyou for your ❤️and support - come join us for the Last Dance. For those of you that enjoy a good time from all of us in the team - Let us entertain you
It does seem as though he’s done playing Venom. That said, Tom Hardy could be talking more about the Venom franchise here. Even though he’s suggesting that he won’t be playing the role again, it does seem as though he’s referencing the Venom movie specifically and less so the character. It’s pretty clear that should Marvel Studios come knocking at Tom Hardy’s door asking him to return asEddie Brock/VenominAvengers: Secret Wars, the British thespian will say yes. Hardy’s made it very clear over the years that he truly loves playing Venom, and he could easily be convinced to play him one more time, but this time in the MCU in what could end up becoming the biggest movie ever released.
Avengers: Secret Warsis slated for release in theaters on Jun 13, 2025.
