Summary

Smile 2andTerrifier 3have been huge box office successes this past fall, but I’m still waiting for another horror sequel. Yes, I’m talking aboutScream 7, which is a long way away from opening in movie theaters. At the beginning of October, I was thrilled to hear thatScream 7will be released on February 27th, 2026. I’m even more eager to see what the slasher franchise does next after learning thatNeve Campbell is coming back to play Sidney Prescott. There are a lot of horror final girls, but Sidney is special, from her family story to her connection to Ghostface to her positivity and perseverance. I appreciate Ghostface as a dangerous villain, but I also like that Sidney has real character development.

I’m sureScream 7will be as satisfying as the other six movies in the franchise, from a fast-paced opening scene to some big surprises throughout. Sure, there have been a lot of changes since the movie was originally announced, but I have faith in this popular and beloved slasher franchise. However, after a recent update,I’m concerned about one part ofScream 7… and need to talk about it.

Why I’m Worried About One Part Of Scream 7

On October 24th, 2024,Patrick Dempsey appeared on theTODAYshow and talked aboutScream 7.I’m one of the manyScreamfans who has been curious to hear if the actor will reprise his role of detective and Sidney’s husband Mark Kincaid and have thought aboutwhat Mark’sScream 7storyline would look like. I was immediately interested to hear what the actor had to say… and his comments got me thinking. According toDeadline, he said:

“I’m waiting on the script. There has been a conversation about it. I haven’t seen anything yet. So, we’ll see what happens."

When Al Roker inquired about Demsey wanting to play Mark again, the actor said:

“I mean, you know, it’s always good to have a job.”

I’m worried that Dempsey said he’s “waiting” for theScream 7script because the movie is supposed to film in December 2024. Does this mean that the script hasn’t been written yet? SinceJenna Ortega and Melissa Barrera leftScream 7and were originally going to play sisters Sam and Tara Carpenter, it seems that there was a version of the screenplay at some point. But, of course, some major changes have to be made since two main characters are no longer part of the story. I’m sure there will be a great script by the time the movie starts shooting, but it is a bit surprising to hear that December is almost there and Dempsey hasn’t been shown the screenplay.

My theory is that Kevin Williamson, whotook over from Christopher Landon as directorearlier this year, could be reworking the script or writing a new one altogether. There is no confirmation of this, but it could be possible, right?Williamson wroteScream,Scream 2, andScream 4, so he has a long history with the slasher franchise. It’s always compelling to hear what the writer/director/producer has to say, whetherWilliamson is talking aboutScream 6or another horror franchise altogether. Many fans would be pleased to seeScream 7written by Williamson, especially sincethe movie is going to be about Sidneymore than anything else.

Why I’m Excited For Scream 7

I’m looking forward to seeingScream 7becauseI enjoy the balance of humor and fearin the slasher franchise. I wonderif any legacy characters are coming backand I think there’s a lot of room for many of them, especially Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox). Most of all, though,I want to hear about what has happened to Sidney Prescottand see how she beats Ghostface this time. I’m alsocurious about Sidney’s familyand want to see how they’re integrated into the new story.

I’m not the only one who is happy about Sidney being back, of course. Fans are thrilled to watch the final girl again, and Neve Campbell is also pleased. The actress toldPeoplein June 2024:

“I was really grateful that they came back to me in a respectful way. I think that means a lot to women and to society. I’m grateful to be able to step in into Sidney’s shoes again and tell her story.”

Although I’m curious about why Patrick Dempsey said he hasn’t seen theScream 7script yet, I think the upcoming slasher is going to be great. I’m counting down the months until February 2026.
