The haunting environments and soundtrack ofWitchfirecomplement the nail-biting first-person combat against the Witch’s undead hordes. Since it is asouls-like rogue-lite game, and a rather good one, do not expect a helping hand, at least not from the living.
Your expeditions will soon take you to a trail of blood-red footprints that want you to follow them into nothingness. Should you follow them? Are the spirits trying to help you? All good questions. With several secrets and buried treasures waiting to be uncovered inWitchfire, you want to know what these footprints mean.
You will encounter a ghostly trail of red footprints after reaching the Scarlet Coast inWitchfire. They appear randomly, and unlike enemies and ammunition chests, their locations are not pinned on the map. The only way to encounter them is to keep exploring the Scarlet Coast until you spot a red glow as shown in the image above.
Scarlet Coast can be unlocked by clearing the Island of the Damned. When you’re able to beat the Shieldbearer, return to the Island of the Damned to enter (and clear) the Wailing Tower. This is the best progression order to beatWitchfire.
Most beginners inWitchfirewill probably head in the opposite direction, thinking that the red glow signifies danger. That is not always the case. The glow will disappear when you come near, revealing a trail of bloody footprints.
You now have a choice to make: follow the footprints or not. Do the former because thered footprints always lead to a hidden treasureinWitchfire. These will often be cursed artifacts, meaning picking them up risksincreasing your Calamity level. You can negate that risk by using volatile crystals to cleanse the relic or having ahigh Luck stat inWitchfire.
Calamity is a separate bar in the top-left corner of the screen. It fills up with the Witch’s eye every time you make a mistake. Once full, you can either fight a horde of enemies, fight the skulls (twister), or take the portal back to the Hermitorium.
Return to the Hermitorium, and all your treasures will be automatically converted to Gold, which can then be spent researching new weapons, spells, magical items, and other gear. Gold is also used toimprove your research speed inWitchfire. It is a vital in-game currency you want to farm by the hundreds. Hence, always follow the red footprintsas it is one of the best ways to farm Gold inWitchfire.
The footprint trails will often lead you through enemy areas. Keep checking your map all the way. If you are about to enter a dangerous area, mark a waypoint for the footprints before engaging. Once all the enemies are beaten, follow the waypoint to get back on the trail.
