Of all the video game adaptations coming to cinemas,A Minecraft Movieis perhaps the most intriguing. The film will adapt Mojang Studios' massively popular sandbox game for live-action, with many big names cast in the project, including Jack Black, Jason Momoa, and Jennifer Coolidge.
The plot of the upcomingMinecraftmovie will follow a ragtag group of humans who venture into the fantastical Overworld and meet expert crafter, Steve (played by Black). Under Steve’s wing, the group, consisting of Momoa, Emma Meyers, Danielle Brooks, and Sebastian Eugene Hansen’s characters, must each reconnect with the qualities that make them creative to return to the real world.Teasers forA Minecraft Moviehave fans divided, with many skeptical of the film’s live-action aesthetic. While it appears the movie has found logical ways to translate certain gameplay elements into live-action, such as crafting, other elements, like animals, have not been as readily accepted. One thing that is yet to appear inA Minecraft Movie’smarketing, is Jennifer Coolidge.
Jennifer Coolidge’s Secret Minecraft Role
Jason Momoa and Jack Black aren’t the only Hollywood A-listers involved inA Minecraft Movie. In January 2024, it was announced thatLegally BlondeandShotgun Weddingstar Jennifer Coolidge had also been cast in the movie. Coolidge had recently come offan Emmy-winning run inThe White LotusSeasons 1 and 2, but with her role in that series ending, it was unclear what she would do next. As it turns out, Coolidge will be heading to the Overworld whenA Minecraft Moviereleases in 2025, but her exact role remains a mystery.
Coolidge has not been featured in any of the marketing forA Minecraft Movieto date and no character details were provided with her casting announcement, leaving her role a complete secret. Kate McKinnon and Jemaine Clement are in a similar situation, having been cast in the movie but with no appearances in marketing materials to confirm their roles. WithA Minecraft Movieset for an April 2025 release date, the film is still early in its promotional run, so there’s still plenty of time to learn about Coolidge’s role.
Who Could Jennifer Coolidge Be Playing?
Whoever Coolidge is playing it does not appear to be a major role, as Momoa, Hansen, Brooks, and Meyer are confirmed as the main quadrant of characters in the film, alongwith Jack Black as Steve. Coolidge may appear only for a brief cameo in the movie, possibly as a favor to Jared Hess whom she worked with onGentlemen Broncos. But what character would be right for Coolidge in theMinecraftworld?
A Villager
A popular theory is that Coolidge will appear as one ofthe villagers inMinecraft. Villagers are found in many of the biomes ofMinecraftand are there mainly for trading purposes. It’s also possible to give villagers a variety of jobs and to capture or breed them. Villagers are a staple ofMinecraft,so it’s expected that they’ll appear in the movie somehow. There are also nitwit villagers, who are villagers who cannot be assigned a role and cannot be traded with, essentially making them useless. Given some of the roles Coolidge has played in the past, it could be fun to see her appear as a nitwit villager, but it’s a role that would be equally fun in the hands of McKinnon or Clement.
A Witch
AnotherMinecraftarchetype that would suit Jennifer Coolidge’s range is a witch. In the game,witches will typically spawn as part of raids or mobsand are found in swamp huts. Witches are useful to players seeking potions, but they can also consume potions that give them abilities that make them more difficult to defeat. Villagers who are struck by lightning can also turn into Witches. There are many possibilities for how Coolidge could portray a witch inA Minecraft Movie, but given her comedy background she definitely has the ability to bring something unique to the role.
A Parent
Of course, there’s also the possibility that Jennifer Coolidge won’t be a character in the Overworld at all. It’s yet to be revealed how the ragtaggroup of adventurers find themselves in theMinecraftworld, but it will presumably involve some set-up with their day-to-day human lives. It’s possible that this could be where Coolidge’s role sits, perhaps as a parent to either Natalie or Henry. Coolidge did gain notoriety for playing one of the most famous teen parents in American Pie, so playing a parent inA Minecraft Moviecould be a neat way to pay homage to that.
The possibilities are limitless as to other human characters Coolidge could play. She could havesome connection to Momoa’s Garrett “The Garbage Man"or perhaps she’ll serve as a friend to Brooks' Dawn. Regardless of who she portrays, it seems likely that Coolidge’s character will provide some comic relief inA Minecraft Movie, which is exactly how it should be.
